How to pack / unpack your goods?
How to pack for your move well
We've all been there – slogging away for hours just smaller boxes in larger boxes, bigger boxes in larger boxes again, and generally trying to cram everything bar the kitchen sink (and, yes, sometimes even ) with a sprawling collection of cardboard recently scored from the local market. So here are some words of sage advice – and I say looks wise for having moved some 16 times over ten years, I've picked up some pretty good advice along the way – prepare in advance! 'Smart Packing' means efficient packing, and good packing will save you a bundle of time on both ends of the move.
So, think ahead. You should collect your boxes in a month or two before you need to start. And collect a lot of them. It is better to have too much than not enough. Then start assigning goods in paper boxes with simple lists, so that when you start packing, you know exactly what needs to go someplace.
Buy moving supplies
Buy a supply of marker pens. And not just any children, but dark ones telling it like they mean it. Get hold of an endless supply of bubble wrap, some use newspaper for cushioning only (the ink can rub off onto fine china), some loud roll of packing tape, and a pair of sharp scissors.
If you kept them, use the original packaging for small appliances and electronics. If Otherwise, pad, pad, pad – that's what's for bubble wrap. And for protecting your fragile, valuable items, and pictures of your mother-in-law (or father-in-law, as the case may be), you can add additional layers of delicate items by using towels and blankets to insulate the box.
Keep lists
I keep lists of each item is packed away, and then stick the top of the list box, some marked with 'Today' to indicate that they will need as soon as I arrived at my new address. Make sure these ones are loaded last onto the removalist's truck for easy access.
Did someone say removalists? They'll be your best friends from the moment they walk through the front door at the moment your goods arrive safely at your new place. So they make a cuppa and have everything perfectly organized for when they arrive.
Smart Packing is really just a well prepared packing. And while that may be a veil of sorts, it is the key to making it better. And fast. These days I find to be packing a totally painless exercise. Unless, of course, I slip into a Lockback Pocket Knife while cutting some tape and then … Well, that's a different across the range.
