Safety Guidelines When Hand Axe Chopping Wood
Chopping wood is becoming more common in the wood burning stoves gaining in popularity as well as for camping – but how do you perform this task safely? The simple task of cutting up logs can be potentially lethal if you follow some simple rules when using a hand ax to chop wood.
First, keep the hand ax an ax blade sheath when not in use. Covering both ax ax blade and protects any person who may be injured by sharp ax opener. Before using a hand ax handle or examine the wood shaft for nicks or cracks. Also, make sure the blade is attached securely to the shaft and it is not wiggle at the end of the shaft. If the blade is not firmly attached to the shaft it is possible for the blade to fly off while you're working on it.
For maximum protection it is important to have proper personal protective equipment such as a set of safety glasses and safety boots while chopping wood. So by splinters flying in any direction on safety glasses are required. Even the smallest piece of wood comes in contact with your eyes can cause a large injury. With the possibility of large pieces of wood or falling ax while chopping missing the target safety shoes with steel toes are recommended.
Remember to have a firm and stable surface when chopping wood. Never use an ax by attempting to cut a log leaning against a flat surface. The log can spring off to one side but ax can probably continue to fall on your legs or feet. The ax may continue to fall hitting a large stones that can dull the blade. To maintain a stable surface it is important to keep your cutting area clean and free of debris. When you're done chopping log stack one piece on the side before starting again with a new log
It is important that the log you are cutting it with a hand ax least three inches thick and contains no material in it such as old nails or spikes. Foreign objects embedded in a log wood can hurl into the air while chopping of wood and can injure you or other people in the process. The general rule is that if the log wood with metal to throw it away it's not worth the problem of flying metal can cause for a few sticks of wood.
Your cutting stance is essential. When cutting wood with an ax it is important to use both hands to maintain control of the ax. Plant your feet firmly on the ground, several inches apart to balance your weight. You should be standing right in front of the platform log squarely in the middle of your line of sight. You need to be balanced to deliver the most power with every stroke and be prepared deal with a situation that may arise while chopping wood.
Now that you have made the important preparation you are ready to chop wood. Raise ax in hand with both hands tightly gripping the shaft purpose among the log. Your goal is to hit the tree directly in the center. Hitting the wood side or front that can be caused by a glancing blow could result in injury. Put all your energy behind the hatchet and deliver the blow. If your ax will not break the wooden half of the first hit, tap the ax is now embedded in the log on the platform until it makes its way down the grain and splits the log into two pieces.
