Description of Operation Protective Switches
Two articles in last year's number two Er magazine has presented a survey of the operation of overcurrent protective device, based on the use of traditional safety fuse. A similar survey will be presented also for protective devices, manufactured as different other protective switches.
The equipment is in first place:
* Circuit breaker complies with the standards SIST EN 60898 – circuit breaker for overcurrent protection for household and similar installations;
* Residual current circuit breaker without overcurrent protection built in, conform to the standards SIST EN 61008;
* Residual current circuit breaker without overcurrent protection built in, for home use and similar applications (RCCB);
* Residual current circuit breaker with overcurrent protection, in compliance with the SIST EN 61009 standard – residual current circuit breaker for use in household and similar applications (RCCO).
Basic representation of a protective state switch is the position of on-off button on the protection switch that could be down below, in the middle or above. As a rule, the operation of protection switches does not depend on their location, and can usually be mounted in any position, so the manufacturer should be very clearly stating that position in the on-off button or switch handle position corresponds to the "Switched-on" or "switched off". It is also one all the necessary standards for such products. The manufacturer typically fulfill the requirement by printing the information on this product.
For better overview and better efficiency of the manufacturers usually place the indication 0 / I or ON / OFF directly to the ON-OFF buttons.
However, the possibility of an error still remains in the protective device itself. The position of the ON-OFF button can be changed, but not the state of contacts within devices (eg because the contacts are welded). So more and more protective devices represent the actual situation of contacts within the protective devices: red flag – Contact switches are still closed, the green flag – the contacts are open.
Such contact condition indication must ensure that the "green state" is not shown if the contact is still closed, regardless of the position of the switching mechanism and ON-OFF button.
It is often important to know switched-off status protective switch in the shortest possible time, as an immediate process can be interrupted by switching off. And the protective switch can be installed on a relatively remote areas and bad seeing. In such cases the so-called auxiliary switches and signals are used. The difference between them is as follows: A assistant to move always changes the state of its contacts when the protection switch is switched, a signal switches (also named alarm switch), however, only changes in the state of its contacts when the protective device is switched off due to a failure (manual switching-off does not change the contacts' status).
So the work of the switches is to send information – remote signaling – in a remote location, about the changed conditions of the protective device. Therefore, they report a power supply interruption. This remote signaling was conducted by the contacts of an auxiliary switch that can switch on or off an acoustic or other type of signalization.
As for mounting auxiliary switches procedures, the following two situations can be distinguished:
* Built-in auxiliary switches (they are incorporated into the protective device manufacturer);
* Built-on auxiliary switch (a machine-building on the field is possible).
For practical reasons the second variant is, of course, much appreciated.
May consider the principle of operation of the switches can be mechanical or electronic. For protective switches especially mechanical versions are used. There is also a standard with such products must comply, the SIST EN 62019 – Electrical Committee – circuit breaker similar devices used in household areas – Auxiliary contacts' unit.

An example of technical specifications for an auxiliary switch:
* Rated voltage: 230 V ac or 110 V dc
* Rated current: 6 A ac or dc 1 A
* Conditions impede capacity: 1 YOU (with a safety fuse cartridge before 20 A);
* Contact: 1 xa (closing), 1 xb (opening), the most frequently used combinations;
Connecting Terminal: 1-4 mm2.
