Sharpening stones are usually divided into two groups according to the lubricant used on them: oil and water. Lubrication serves to disperse soil particles and prevent them from clogging on the rocks. Choosing between the two is mostly a matter of feeling, some woodworkers prefer the edge of a hard black glassy oilstone Arkansas provides a tool; Others prefer the fine control of a softer Japanese Waterstone offers finish.
Naturally occurring oilstones has long been regarded as the finest sharpening stone. Quarried novaculite from and sold as the Washita and Arkansas stones, they sharpened surface becomes scarce. If your budget permits, natural stone is a good investment, they will last a lifetime.
Synthetic substitute made of aluminum oxide (India stone) or silicon carbide (Crystolon) are cheaper and just as effective as natural of stones, though they tend to wear faster. Comoromise is a costly use of a rough stone for sharpening and whetting India, and a hard Arkansas stone for honing and polishing. When using oilstones, they often wipe with a rag to prevent glazing. Do not use a heavy oil, as it inhibits the abrading process; a light machine oil cut with a wedge works best.
Waterstones Japanese in origin, and cut faster than oilstones. Because they use water, instead of oil as the lubricant, no oily mess left in the clothing and workpieces. Waterstones come finer than oilstones grade, making it popular with woodworkers would to hone and polish. Because they are slower than oilstones, new abrasive is constantly exposed during use,
and the slurry formed by the water will form a fine polishing paste.
Waterstones have their drawbacks, however. Because they are slower than oilstones, they should be trued more often.
These tools are should be dried thoroughly and wiped with oil after sharpening to prevent rust. Waterstones also be stored in water. If the shop is prone to cold temperatures, keep Your waterstones from freezing, as they will shatter.
