With Snowdonia National Park in Wales in Blaenau Ffestiniog Rail

Narrow, not rusted rails straight from the dark, slate-gray and green velvet Snowdonia Mountains in Wales' Blaenau Ffestiniog Station, the limitations of the single-street, stone architecture Welsh town. Haze clouds, such as transparent sheaths, draped their himself in the mountains in the hole, 50-degree temperature, while the smoke from the chimneys of the city collectively filled the air with his almost-welcome aroma. Would simply coincide with the heat smell! Noon blasting his whistle and emit bilious smoke from her stack, black steam engine mount emerged from the tunnel after his one-hour, ten minute ascent from Porthmadog.

Although the current station was constructed on the site of the old Ffestiniog / Great Western Railway Station in 1833, the original line Ffestiniog Duffws was terminated, which was opened for passenger operations in 1866 and had closed in 1930. The modern-day Blaenau Ffestiniog Station, opened in 1982, is a Network Rail joint facility in Conway Valley Branch Line.

A lurch, created by the initial couplings snagging the car, and a second whistle, preceded the first the train's movement across the platform. Sandwiched between gray rock walls, built up seemingly tracing paper thin slate, the comparatively minuscule steam engine, pulling its string of narrow bogies of passenger cars, plunged by a night-transforming tunnel, reemerging abreast of rolling green hills.

The Ffestiniog Rail had its origins in the mining industry. A significant housing demand, with the slate roof it, was created by the Industrial Revolution, and the mountains of North Wales, rich in such resources, is quickly accessed through a tremendous amount of rail lines connected to mines high-elevation with ports that sea-level.

In 1798, WA Madocks, when several parcels land, performed a series of reclamation projects, Traeth Mawr including the coast, which extended inland to Port Aberglaslyn, and that of the Great Weir, known as the "clout," across the estuary. The cob itself, diverting the River Glaslyn, created a natural harbor called Port Madoc which later became known as "Porthmadog."

Initial slate mining deposits occurred in the mountains near Blaenau Ffestiniog. The products, transported by pack animal-drawn carts in the rough farm road into the River Dwyryd, then move on to the shallow-draft river boats and taken downstream for further transfer to large sailing ships.

The primitive, repair manuals soon proved capable of satisfying the demand, and a train, surveyed by James Spooner, from Worcestershire, was constructed and incorporated as the Railway Festiniog by an Act of Parliament on May 23, 1832. Although it ran on the track, it continues to use non-motorized propulsion, gravity-induced time of descent and horse-pulled at the time of return. Sa 23.5 inches, the narrow-gauge tracks corresponded to that of the railroads quarry, and proved advantageous during the same operational phases: it is wide enough to allow the horse to efficiently haul the empty cars in the mountains, yet narrow enough to allow easy negotiation of many curves mandated by of mountainous terrain.

Demand, soon eclipsing the horse-chain-gravity system, pointed to the need for steam engine power, but This proved unfeasible because of the two initially insurmountable restrictions:

  1. Operation of a steam engine in such a narrow gauge was not envisioned as impractical.
  2. Passengers can only be legally taken by the British standard gauge tracks, 4 feet, 8.5 inches.

Starts its descent 710 feet from the sea, the narrow-gauge chain made the steep, one-mile sprint from cutting in Tanygrisiau Summit, where it will join a rail-bound Blaenau Ffestiniog, to stop the other tracks. Originally opened in 1866, it was featured in a continuous gradient to Boston Lodge to permit gravity to pull its heavy, slate-filled cars towards the coast. The station itself was not reopened as part of the tourist railroad later to 1978. After a brief pause, the train once again regain momentum.

The restrictions, impeding implementation route steam technology, will not succeed until Charles Easton Spooner, James Spooner's son, took over the railroad in 1856 and there invited tenders to design and build such a locomotive, not awarding contracts to seven years, in 1863, with George England and Company for four small trains. The first of these, the Princess, in a 0-4-0 configuration side with tenders for coal, became the world's first narrow-gauge passenger car driven by steam engine when it enters service in Ffestiniog Rail in October of that year. The mountaineer, entering the service concurrently, followed by Prince and Palmerston in 1864. The Prince has earned several titles, including the oldest working engine in Ffestiniog Railroad, which is the oldest working engine anywhere in the world, and the oldest steam engine still in its original configuration line, although its soft was converted to carry oil as opposed to its original coal to reduce the risk of fire line side.

The Board of trustees ultimately granted the railroad permission to transport train passengers, making it Britain's first narrow-gauge, passenger-carrying rail lines, even though it initially only carried quarrymen. Increasing demand is satisfied that the introduction of two more trains, the Welsh pony and the Little Giant, in 1867. The former, developed by George England as a larger, more capable successor to his original four-engine, is featured saddle tank from the start, while his earlier derivatives are reconfigured to standard.

Round edges on the left side of the surface silver-emerged the lake, the Ffestiniog Rail traveled past grazing white sheep, which mostly appear as topographical extension of the rolling, green velvet hills. plunging into the mountain-bored tunnel, it is once again engulfed by darkness, its interior lights provide only temporary illumination.

Two miles before reaching Dduallt, train followed a 35-foot-high spiral deviation, which was rebuilt in 1965 to the Ffestiniog Power Station will be installed. The station itself, opened in 1865 and operating its own Station Master before World War II, passed without cessation.

Campbell's Platform, following in quick succession, is a private station which is served Dduallt Manor, a small manor house slightly dating to the 15th century. Colonel Andrew Campbell, who is a licensed fireworks handler has helped construct the Dduallt Spiral, had bought the house in 1962 and had stored in his own diesel locomotive in his shed, using it to travel as far as Tan y Bwlch.

Garnedd emerging from the tunnel and maintaining a high-pitched scream as the spark igniting the wheel of his carriage turns rounded passengers, the train passes through the tall, needle-thin and refined Llyn Mair (Mair Lake) became visible by windows on the left. Briefing Tan y Bwlch stopping, it hired two passengers. Opened in 1873, Tan y Bwlch had reclosed 66 years later in 1939, and was again re-activate return in 1958.

The Ffestiniog Rail's later engine, although stronger, had proved only a temporary remedy, as escalating demand indicated the need for additional tracks and so allow an Act is passed in 1869. However, the cost and engineering obstacles doubling of existing lines proved prohibitive and the solution was again lay in the design of a still more powerful locomotive can pull, train higher-capacity. Such a design, however, incorporating the optimum combination of features, it seems an inherent contradiction, for, while a larger, more powerful locomotive can haul, the more serious train, it is equally not round the sharp curves and steep gradients to climb the narrow nature of the metals, mining topographical mountain railroads.

The solution emanated from Robert Fairlie, a train engineer who designed a double-Bogie engine, the Little Wonder, a 0-4-4-0T configuration, consisting of a single, solid boiler, but accurate emergence of two smaller trains attached together like bookends. Built Fairlie Engine and Steam Carriage Company, it produced more than double the power of the smaller single engine, yet is easy to negotiate tight curves on the track's and steep inclines.

In 1872, the Ffestiniog Rail users also became the first of Bogie passenger coaches in Great Britain.

Although the line has been developed for some 83 years, cheaper tiles eventually replaced slate as roofing material and its purpose gradually diminished until, in 1946, it was forced to cease operations. The original locomotive was the last Princess to run. The Welsh pony had undergone major overhauls in 1891 and 1915, but her boiler was condemned in 1938.

A Maintenance Society, founded to restore and open the again the line, a rebuilt 2.5-mile track section which is flooded to make way for a hydroelectric station, and now enjoys railroad a resurgence as a steam engine-powered, narrow-gauge tourist trains to travel the 13 miles between Porthmadog and Blaenau Ffestiniog several times each day.

Billowing white smoke belching, steam engines passed Plas Stop, stations opened in 1963 to serve Plas Tan y Bwlch, a house from the 1600s and the seat of Oakley family, a quarry owner from the late 18th century to 1961. In 1975 the house became a Snowdonia National Park residential learning center. Now a 375-foot-elevation and halfway through his 13-mile journey, the carriage rocked as laterally clanked their wheels over the narrow rails. A snaking river falls somewhat below the train as slope receded below.

The Ffestiniog Rail operated a variety of restored, narrow-gauge passenger carriages Bogie, typical of which is the number 11. Originally built in 1880 by Wagon Company of Gloster Gloster, it served as Number railroad's fourth car, but was again during the 1928-1929 period as a passenger / brake carriage. Reentering service in 1956 with new, railroad tourist post-mining, it subsequently appeared in a finite observation window and then salon a second renovation the following year, and was mounted on a steel underframe in 1967.

The current number 12, have also built by Gloster Wagon Company and having served as the car Number 5, had seen service as a passenger / brake carriage after her 1929-1930 reconstruction. One of the first two cars restored by the Maintenance of Society, it reentered service in 1955, and two years later was fitted with a buffet counter and a side corridor, and was coupled with Carriage Number 11. Having been lengthened and also mounted on a steel underframe, it operated for some 20 years until a renovation in 1982 saw the removal of the cuff counter and the installation of a new seating arrangement.

My carriage is configured with dual, facing seat on the left and the single, facing seat on the right, which are upholstered in red material and separate grains of the wood tables. The first class compartment, located mid-way in the carriage, is accessed by a hinged door opening in either external coach section, which is adorned with blue-upholstered chairs in pairs either side and the wood grains in separating the table. The carriage has a vaulted ceiling and wood paneling covered side walls. Train attendants took orders for hot drinks, crisps and chocolate, cakes and biscuits, soft drinks, and intoxicating beverages.

Rhiw Goch, a crucial point in the original Ffestiniog Rail, is the station where the load, decreases meet the train empty, up ones. A horse stage station between 1836 and 1863, it was the location of contractor-provided horses, to pull the empty wagons slate at every stage. The horses themselves are transported to the lower stage in fine station wagons.

Stopping Penrhyn in 1305, the train is now ten miles from sa Blaunau Ffestiniog and a 160-foot elevation. The station, opened in 1865, was again with material from old Porthmadog Station in 1879. The stop itself was reopened with new Rail Ffestiniog in 1956.

Displaying a heavy trail of billowing steam, the engine that led to his chain of carriages snaking through low, dense green vegetation, having left the high-elevation of the mountains behind it.

Minffordd, opened in 1872, was the trains switch sa Cambrian Coast Line and the site of the former Depot Outdoor Slate Engineering Trans-Yard groups.

The silver-gray surface of the harbor, seeing ahead and left, now are separated by flat marsh that extended from the coast tracks.

Boston Lodge, which had originally opened in 1928, is the location of the Boston Lodge Works, the quarry site for the stone used in building the cob between 1808 and 1811, while Boston Lodge itself served as the offices and stables at the time of its construction. The 1856 Weigh House, perched on its top end, is used to weigh the load, dropping slate train, but was later superseded by the Minffordd in 1872.

Following the coast, the train turned to the left where the tracks blown six and pulled in Porthmadog Station, which had originally opened in 1865 and now is alive with crowds awaiting the return ascent of Blaenau Ffestiniog.

The lines, if the hauling slate for mining, transporting passengers for profit, or carrying tourists for pleasure has succeeded in maintaining its usefulness for some 150 years.
