Selling yourself without overdoing it.
There is nothing wrong with being detected. In fact, that's what writers do. We ooze confidence, we know what to say and how to say it and we get noticed because of it. But Sometimes we over-sell, and that can be embarrassing, not to mention futile.
I just read a sales pitch to Elance.com that made me cringe. The writer apparently experienced, she had completed a lot of projects in the area of a client's advertising, but he over-did it.
Elance is a contractor website allows consumers to post their projects and sellers bid on the project.
I was browsing through project when I came across a little beauty. The project is a fairly standard proof-reading and copyediting work, but a particular bidder is decided that an overly aggressive approach is best. I can not repeat verbatim (I do not want an angry e-mail, for one), so let me paraphrase His sales pitch. Judge for yourself:
"Hello. I want to point out that you spelled 'prove' wrong with your project description. No I mean to be rude, I just wanted to show you just how GOOD I am and what I can DO FOR YOU! I have the proof-reader you need. I have more than 20 years experience as a proof-reader and copy editor … "
If I had a customer posting a project, I am certain I would be more than one little annoyed if my potential employee told me that I can not spell – even if it is true. I chose them for the project and I will most certainly avoid them in the future. The customer is not looking to be criticized in such a public way. It is a humiliating way to sell and I was surprised that anyone might think it's a good idea!
Confidence is better than pride!
Needless to say, he did not get a job. I'm sure that his confidence in his own abilities as a copyeditor is justified, the problem is that his confidence was tipped over and arrogance. Over-selling is over-kill.
The sales pitch can be difficult to judge, what may work well for a customer can disorient others. Quite an art to sell yourself without looking like you just forced your way into someone's home with a vacuum cleaner, a box of bleach and a knife sharpening kit. People do not like being forced to purchase from you. Your words should be informative. If they want you they are far more likely to buy your expertise.
If you is too weak to your pitch they can smell fear. It is no use being trampled by the opposition, so you must be the best, knowing that you The best and show that you can do it without upsetting the buyer!
It is old, but it is good – the customer is always right. And it never, never pays to point out their mistakes!
