Selection of kitchen knives and cutlery
When choosing kitchen knives, there are some things to consider before making your final choice. Each aspect is as important as the others and all must be taken into account.
A good grip is vital
A good comfortable grip is essential, after all knives are sharp and you can injure yourself quite badly if the grip is not good enough. The knife handle should be shaped so that it sits safely and comfortably in your hand. What the handle is made to depend on the type of knife and also the cost, but remember, holds made of plastic can be slippery, wood can be easily broken if not properly cared for and metal can be unwieldy.
Types of blades
The blade can be made from many different materials as well, however, stainless steel remains a popular favorite and with good reason. High quality stainless steel, especially steel Sheffield, is stable and long lasting when properly cared for. Carbon steel is a softer metal than stainless steel and is easily sharpened, the downside is that it also blunts easily. Ceramic blades require a special diamond stone for sharpening. However, they remain sharp for longer than steel and rust and stain proof. There are two options for edge blade, serrated or straight. Serrated edges do not usually require sharpening but often not the 'clean' cutting action. Normal bread knives have a serrated edge and serrated edge is particularly good for cutting tomatoes etc.
Other knives for different jobs
There are different knives for different jobs and it is advisable to use a particular knife for the task at hand. For example, it is no use to try and carve your joint of meat with a paring knife and similar it is not advisable to use a bread knife to cut your vegetables.
Kitchen knife set
The solution is simple of course, because you You buy a set of kitchen knives, they generally come in a knife block or a case and some are also equipped with their own devices sharpened. The sets will have a selection of knives for a particular activity, giving you a range of appropriate knife for your cooking. A definite bonus is that you set Knives will remain safely in their own proper storage area and it will help keep them sharp. At the very least, make sure your set includes chef's knife, a bread knife, a paring knife, a utility knife and a slicing or carving. This will give you an appropriate exercise for most of your cooking activities and after all, as you will spend a good deal of your time preparing meals, maybe you also have the right tools for the job.
Touch before buying
When choosing kitchen knives, touch them, pick them up and hold them in your hands, get a feel for what they wanted to work with. Make sure the tang (the part of the blade embedded in the handle) goes all the way the knife handle and is balanced.
Finally, try to buy the best quality you can afford, these knives will last longer and hopefully, give you many years of fun cooking.
