Mechanical seal Introduction
Mechanical seal is used increasingly fluid pumps to replace packed glands and lip seals.Pumps mechanical seal to perform better and generally perform more reliably for extended periods of time.
Mechanical seals are provided to prevent pumped fluid from leaking out along the shafts.The drive controlled leakage path is between two flat surfaces associated with the rotating shaft and the housing respectively.The path leakage gap varies with the number of faces subject to various external loads that tend to move their faces against each other.
The mechanical seal require a different other housing design shaft arrangement compared to that for other types of seals because the seal is a more complicated arrangement and the mechanical seal does not provide any support to the shaft.
In order for the mechanical seal to perform over an extended period of time in low frictional faces is generally hydrodynamically lubricated.The fluid film will need to carry large load.If load becomes high for the film contact surface will take place with consequent bearing failure. This lubricating film is generally of the order of 3 micrometres thick, or less. This thickness is critical to the required sealing seal function.Mechanical often have one face of a suitable solid lubricant such that the seal can still operate for a period without the liquid film.
Pressure Balance Mechanical seal
It is possible reduce the seal contact pressure by using a pressure balanced seal design set off a proportion of energy generated by the pumped fluid principle pressure.This is illustrated in the sketch below.
Design Features
The mechanical seal typically includes a three static seal.
The sleeve seal – it is usually a-O Ring
The brand transition between the seal member and the shaft or sleeve .- It is often a fairy-ring but can be a wedge or vee seal. This brand can not be used for bellows type mechanical seal
The housing seal is usually a ring or a gasket.
All stamps must be compatible with the liquid being contained and the associated seals may limit environment.These design for high temperature applications. In this case the alternative bellows type be the best option.
The sealing faces are usually pressed together using some form of spring loading. Several different spring loading systems are available.

For conventional single spring mechanical seal arrangements are used.The other spring arrangements are used in space is prohibited.
It is vitally important that the sealing surface perfectly flat and parallel.
The seal faces are usually not identical with the material being narrow face softer surface. For applications like hard abrasive materials are used eg tungsten carbide. The surface seal must have sufficient strength to withstand the hydrostatic fluid forces and should be removed the heat generated by sliding action.Carbon is often used against copper, cast iron, stainless steel etc.
The seal surface should be flat, smooth and square to the shaft. Both a normal surface lapped with a high quality finish. The harder surface is most important because the softer surface is designed to run in the first operating period.
The shaft design is critical. It should be sturdy enough to support the seal in the right position and the shaft surface finish should be appropriate to ensure good sealing of the static seal (0.4 micrometers CLA or better). The shaft Total indicated runout (TIR) should not be exceeded 0.125mm.There minimum vibration.The shaft shaft may be subject to fretting corrosion as a result of micro-motion stamps and is often desirable to have a locally hardened surfaces or use the sleeve.
Assembly Options

Seal exterior .. This design was installed outside the stuffing box pressure sealed inside. It provides excellent allowing access under the brands components to be to be clean.
Internal Seal .. Often mechanical seal is mounted within the stuffing box with sealed pressure outside the seal.
Double seal .. Acted mechanical seal mounted in the pair is used for sealing hazardous, toxic or abrasiv fluids and are often provided with clean flushing fluid seal between providers seals.Double also an additional level of safety is the pressure differentials are likely to reverse and / or those with a high risk of failing sealing. There are a number of options double seal assembly as listed below
Series – Used primarily to overcome the risks of failure of a single stamp.
Trap – Used when a cooling liquid interface is needed. A seal was used for liquid process other stamps are used for coolant.
Back to Back – Used when a Abrasive fluid is contained and both seals are flushed with a clean flushing liquid fluid.The buffer is introduced at a higher pressure liquid processes
