How Does Wood Composite decking Compare with Natural Wood decor?
Composite wood has increasingly become a popular alternative as an alternative to natural wood decking, extensively promoted as a product that requires little regular maintenance that does not twist, warp or discolor like natural wood products used outside. And most certainly it is true that composite wood will exhibit some excellent features, but there are other characteristics of composite wood that should be stated. Let's look at them in turn.
At the outset, it should be noted that like most products, composite wood will vary between different manufacturers because not only can the basic components vary: Polyethylene or polypropylene, new or recycled plastic material or any ratio of two, wood fiber, bamboo fiber or fiber or other components of a mixture of reclaimed wood material plus, but minor components such as UV stabilizers, processing aids etc will also vary. And any of the components including the actual processing and extrusion techniques may influence the final properties of composite wood decking. Thus these observations below should only be taken in general terms.
1. No twisting or warping. Provided that the wood composite extruded profile with due care so that no stresses are allowed to build up the profile, then it should be expected that the composite wood decking should not display any twisting or warping under normal circumstances. But in some cases reported that composite decking may experience some bowing along its length, although it does not automatically be a problem if the decor is safe attached to bearers. This however may cause some slight problems with interlocking composite wood deck tiles in which the slats of the tiles are not firmly attached to the bearers below.
2. Minimal lasting. Given to making wood composite decking is used good quality color pigments resistant to fading in the sun, then in fact composite wood decking is as a rule exhibit very little fade. Usually the color can gradually lose only about 10% in the first 3-6 months but then gradually lose very little continuous exposure.
3. No splintering. Composite wood decking should not stick because it does not contain sharp long fibers.
4. Staining. Composite wood is not resistant to staining, and it is suggested if the material is used around outdoor grills etc, and sealed with a product that is explicitly intended for wood composite is applied.
5. Structural strength. Typically, the composite wood will not have the structural strength comparable to the strongest hardwoods like Ipe. decking planks usually need to be supported by bearers in closer intervals than the natural wood decor, because it is prone to sagging. By composite wood deck tiles but which are installed solid surface, it is not an issue.
6. Mold and mildew resistance. While composite wood may contain some additives to reduce the formation of mold and mold, most consumer reports tend to indicate that the composite wood does not show any improved resistance to mold and mildew compared to natural wood.
7. Decay & Rot Resistance. Composite wood used in outdoor locations must not decay or decompose under ordinary circumstances, although there is apparently a case of faulty manufacturing faulty parts where composite wood has shown premature failure in use.
8. Insect resistance. Since composite wood decking is partially composed of a plastic material that is not normally attacked by wood boring insects.
8. Resistance to scratching and marking. Composite wood is not a very hard material, so you do not have the same resistance to scuffing and marking as the hardest natural woods like Ipe.
9. Fire resistance. Since wood composite consists of a plastic material and wood fibers, it is not fire resistant, whereas some hardwoods like Ipe is rated as Class A resistance fire.
So like most materials, there are pros and cons of using either natural wood or composite wood, so it's really up to the to resolve individual consumer characteristics are important to them
