Interested Youth Get A Career In Law Enforcement
It is probably a situation more than a regional issue, but one question I is more than thinking how to get young people more interested in police work. To my knowledge and experience, the majority of the departments of big cities and villages are in a constant fight to keep their level of recruiting up, and it seems like the standards are continually moved lower to meet recruiting goals. I sure that it is more reflect society's development as a whole, but that is a subject fully worth it's own discussion.
From the perspective a police officer's, there are all kinds of things we can do to ensure kids continue to aspire to a career in law enforcement. Many cities and police departments take it upon themselves to host youth activities so police officers, the youth, and the local community in general can all interact each other in a safe and non-hostile environment. There Dare, different program counselor, police explorer program. But what are the things we can do as regular line officers to make a better impression on the young people so they look at a career in police work as something to be admired and not disdained? So where should the law enforcement community start? How do you get young people more interested in a career in law enforcement? As with any problems, there are many different approaches to tackling this situation, and no one silver bullet that will go into solution.
Often times the most detrimental to the area kids can form their opinion of police officers while actively at work. The officer safety concerns and civil liability, not to mention mentally document are all going to a given scene, officers rarely have the luxury of stopping to think what their actions may mean a child watching. Frequency times the most effective method is also most appropriate. But those issues aside, we really do not know who's watching, and tempering our mannerisms and authentic empathy can be given when it can often be a major factor in shaping perceptions of the police youth and a career in law enforcement.
At work can also be one of the best times for a child to form his / her opinion of the police. I have kids coming up to me all the time asking for stickers, and it is one of the easiest ways to show kids the lighter side of my personality. Light conversation from a uniformed officer at Children at this age can go a long way in forming perceptions of the police in general later in life for children. Kids always have questions about my police equipment, and I do not balk at the opportunity to make a good impression to an inquisitive child.
What about policing each other? One hardest thing to do is correct a fellow officer, especially when it is something more than just a personal preference and not a violation of department policy. But officials with you're friends should be open to your advice, provided that you have not tarnished your own reputation or is not the type who always has advice for others unwelcome. If you are coming an area of real concern, your words should fall on receptive ears.
The media is going to be on the side of whatever sells – be it in advertising, subscriptions, box-office sales, no matter what. So we can not count on it to describe what's in the best interest of law enforcement and recruiting levels. Parents also play a major role in shaping youth perceptions of the police, especially when parents are habitual offender. The law enforcement and pro-law enforcement citizens should make their own proactive steps to ensure that our youth will continue to see a career in law enforcement and police work in a positive light. It is good for the community and good for the department.
