I. Disposal of Knives: The Safest Knife Thrower
The safest knife thrower is the one who takes safety precautions in every aspect of throwing a knife. From the knife, to throw, how you feel, safety first. Safety rules! This is the master. So, everybody has a heads up.
Throwing knives, especially professional throwing knives, do not have a handle. You are about to grasp the blade, a continuous piece of metal, just by your hand. Following that, a safe thrower must use blunt-edged blades at all times. Allow me to repeat: Always use blunt-edged blades. Your hands will thank you for it. Suddenly takes the side of real importance to the success of disposal or the stick. And competitions do not allow for sharp edges.
The way in which you grip your knife throwing is crucial to the success of each disposal. To be fit enough for a good grip, one must have a pretty strong upper body, including arms and hands. Push ups are a fantastic exercise for them. If you do push ups on your knees, or a wall, with your fingers the number of your contacts and not your palm or fist, you are conditioning your chest, arms, hands and fingers, simultaneously. Finger weights or groundwater can further strengthen your fingers. Hand grips are very effective. Think of it this way, if your hands are not too strong, your strict grip will not either. Without a strong grip, skills, that can not be developed. If you have difficulty gripping the knife, use tape or similar sticky material around the handle. Be sure to extend the tape from the end of the handle to the center of the knife when you're done wrapping it up. And if you want easy release, just use the "tape" material with a flat, smooth surface.
There is a proper stance when preparing to throw. There is a well swing arm and body movements. A proper release. All this movement combined to make your complete throwing form. While training will affect your accuracy and success, something that you should not overlook: how you feel. That makes sense. Do not throw away when you are tired, sleepy or disoriented. Even a little. After a pieces or training, your throwing arm, from your chest to the tips of your fingers, will start hurting. Do not keep throwing. Rest up first. And do not throw when you are hungry or mad, sick or recovering from some "small" injury. Actually, no. You're throwing a deadly weapon and you should not risk hurting anyone, especially yourself!
How about the target itself? What makes a good target? A chunk of solid wood is very good for a target. Anything metal, concrete or a material of similar hardness should not be used. The knife should be able to penetrate and stick to the target. If not, what's the use? It should be in a safe location where bounce-offs can not injure anyone or damage anything. The trajectory path should be clear and free of all traffic. A good safe distance was a hundred feet in all directions explicitly. Your distance from the target is also very important. It is much better to hit your target five times in ten feet away than it is to hit your target once in twenty feet away. Once you've mastered throwing a short distance, only then should you increase your distance from the target. Baby steps.
Let's add a dash or two of common sense here. Actual Some will think that it is unnecessary to say this, but there are some for whom you MUST say this: Do not dispose of knives during a rain or snowfall. Do not dispose of knives in inclement weather or during a storm. Make sure your throwing area is well lit and clear of debris or material that can be airborne. Buildings and trees should be well outside your safety zone. And when you throw, do not take your eyes off the knife until it comes to rest.
It's just a bit of knowing what is best to remove all risk of injury. After all, you were throwing sharp blades at high speed over a distance. Even the safest knife thrower. Good luck and Be Careful!
