Its origins are generally credited with Swedish physiologist medical doctor, and gymnastics teacher, Dr. Per Henrik Ling, while the French term used to name his basic strokes will be credited to a later Dutch practitioner, Dr Johan Georg Mezger.
Some researchers argue that it is Dr. Mezger who actually came to what is now known as the Swedish massage and that it has no Dr. Ling's related procedures. The basic strokes of Swedish massage, they say, is not a part of Dr. Ling's Swedish Gymnastic Movements nor this curriculum the Royal Central Gymnastic Institute which he founded in 1813.
Other researchers counter that Dr. Ling is based on the treatment that is part of his Swedish gymnastic Actions of the Chinese Tui Na, a form of bodywork using acupressure that is also part of martial arts training. He had learned it from a close Chinese friend who was a practitioner Tui Na and a martial arts expert. It is, therefore, not surprising that the body work up and healing techniques used in martial arts in China are also used by Dr. Ling for her gymnastics training.
Actually, Dr. Ling's Swedish Gymnastic Movements and his Royal Central Gymnastic Institute is not only concerned in gymnastics as a sport. In fact, he developed a system of gymnastics, exercises and maneuvers – including basic strokes of what would later be called Swedish massage – as a cure for the disease. He is a member of the Swedish General Medical Association and his methods came to be known as the Swedish medical gymnastics.
Researchers believe Dr. Ling as the originator of the Swedish massage point out that his system of clapping, knocking, stroking, kneading, pulling, shaking and vibrating is very similar to the basic techniques of Tui Na and is the same as the basic strokes of Swedish massage. They say that Dr. Mezger only systematized and named the strokes in French. They are now called effleurage for long, gliding strokes, muscle petrissage for lifting and kneading, friction for the firm, deep, circular movements rubbing, Tapotement for swift tapping or percussive movements, and vibration for rapid shaking or vibrating of specific muscles.
