Field Dressing: So You want to Field Dress a Deer
Field dressing a deer is some kind of work. You've got to have a very strong constitution for it. All this blood and guts, after all. But you decided to become a deer hunter, so you've got to do it and do it well. Sure not want to waste your catch by spoiling the meat. Prepare yourself. This is one experience you'll never forget.
You will need a handful of tool for field dressing procedure. Very small, you should have the following:
? Ery sharp knife that's comfortable in your hand
? Isposable latex or vinyl gloves
? Mall saw for cutting through bone
? Hort light rope around 10 feet in length
? Ery clean cloth (some are better)
? Ealable bag for the heart and liver (if you want to save them)
Now you're ready. Okay. You've gone and caught a deer. Time to get busy.
There are two very important rules to keep in mind all the time. One: Do not hurry. You work in a very sharp knife. Two: Do not take your eyes off your work when your hands are moving. Cutting your hands will slow you down methods for this are doing the job. If you do get a cut, seal it well to protect yourself from the deer's blood. You never know what might be carrying.
First thing is to ready to work in your area. Move the deer in a visible location, especially seeing other hunters in the area. Area a bright orange cloth (or something obvious) high overhead on a tree branch. Lay your tools through the body in a safe, reach distance, more carefully in order that you are using them. Remove heavy coats and wrist unit. Tie back whatever may block your view, or fall into your work space. Be in the right frame of mind. Do not go in handling a very sharp knife if you're tired, upset or distracted. Even if you are just too cold or numbing fingers. Most importantly, do not use a dull knife. It'll overwork you, frustrate and upset you. It promotes spread of accidental damage or cuts that could contaminate the meat. Safety must come first.
The straight cut. It places the body back to the ground, head facing up and higher than the rest of the body. With your gloves , your first cut is an incision just below the breastbone (sternum) to the knife's blade facing up. Insert your index and middle finger, facing up and with cut. Form a "V" and push upwards hide. Position your up-facing knife between your fingers. This will help prevent the cutting of the internal organs which will result in tainting the meat. Following the direction of the hair, keep your incision, a knife between the fingers, all the way to cock a buck or a doe udder.
First stage removal. Make a 2 inch deep incision around the rectum, cutting in a circular motion as you moving around it. If fecal matter is present, tie off the rectum. Pull it into the body cavity so that now it is only attached to the intestine.
? Or a buck, remove the testicles. Reach the body cavity and remove the penis at its base.
? Or a doe, cut all the way around the udder and remove it.
Second removal stage. While it is not necessary, it is recommended that you split the sternum and the hip in half with a saw. This will facilitate the cooling of the body and make it so much easier to remove the internal organs. Look for the bladder as a pear-shaped sac in the lower abdomen. Pinch or tie it off and cut it free, taking special care not to leak any urine that may be present (use your fabric). Place the bladder a safe distance away from your work space. If necessary, use The extra clothes to clean away any leaks coming from the internal organs before and after they are removed. Keep an eye out for dirt or debris that may ve entered the body cavity and remove it.
Roll the body to one side. Most internal organs are coming loose at this point. Connective tissue cut away everything else as holding any organs and intestines in place. If necessary, roll the body on the opposite side and cut what tissue still clings. Roll it back inside. Be sure that the body was drained of all fluids before continuing.
Remove the diaphragm to have access to the cavity of the chest. It is a strong membranous muscle that separates the chest cavity, the heart and lungs, from the abdominal cavity. Reach up as far as you can remove as much of the windpipe as you are able. Now remove the remaining organs, heart, lungs and liver. Use sealable bag to save the heart and liver, if you like. And you're done.
Please, properly dispose of all organs were removed, including any and all parts of the body. Use the rope to drag the deer from the field. This is the most famous made legs and head.
