Dr. Mel Siff Asks If We Should All Write Weights Belts
It is quite common nowadays for some folk to militate against the use of
belts, wraps, wrist straps and other lifting aids on the basis that they
interfere with the body 's natural ability, motor patterns distort or
form some kind of dependence on them irresistible.
This topic of "complementary" or "protective" devices are discussed in our
ergonomics and biomechanics conferences for several years, with papers
being presented both supporting and condemning the use of such 'Ergonomic '
equipment. Interestingly, it is often the studies which are extrapolated to
the world of weightlifting and powerlfting to make a case for or against
use of belts and so on, but it is rarely pointed out that the ergonomic
studies have generally examined The Chronic or long term, repeated use of
these devices, but among the many competitive lifters to use is often reserved
for chronic, sometimes very heavy or maximal attempt.
Working out of context such extrapolations are unscientific and
not mandatory. It is similar in comparison to the use of shoes in sprints and
marathon running, or even the use of weightlifting and powerlifting shoes
(Especially in deadlift and clean).
Right now, no studies have been conducted showing that the occasional and
selective use of belts and wrist straps significant alters or performance
produces reductions in motor skills, strength, power or speed, so it is highly
misleading to take data from chronic, non-sporting, situations out of context
and apply it to chronic situations of weight training and competitive
lifting. Many lifters are agreed that the unnecessary, constant hope
with belts and straps for each lift, regardless of weight, may be detrimental
some aspects of performance, but that kind of usage tends to be confined
more aesthetic, bodybuilding-type, stylish than serious market
training and competitive weight lifting.
Remark that some of the world 's strongest weightlifters compete without
belt above all no matter, because there are large numbers of top
lifters to lift the belt. In fact, the heaviest weight ever jerked overhead
the head (266kg) was achieved by powerful Leonid Taranenko, who was wearing
belts (I was present when he made the great attempt). While this may
indicate that it is quite possible for many lifters to lift large weights
no belts, it does not mean This is detrimental to wear a belt.
Of course, the matter of not wearing a belt and wraps are highly questionable
in powerlifting, due to spectacular can be very significantly improved by
wearing aids while competing. Note that the wearing of aids during
competitive lifting does not mean that one wears them for long periods
during training – most powerlifters do not approve of that or follow that
approach.
As usual it is not a given exercise or given to ways of using a training
item is dangerous in itself, it is on the way and context in which it is used
that can cause problems. To pass a blanket ruling against the use of belt
and wraps all lifting and training applications are extremely distinctly,
because there are acute situations or situations involving added security
that clever and selective use of belts and other lifting aid can play a
positive role. It is only when one excessively dependent and unselectively in
such devices that the problem can be introduced.
Note that there is even more convincing evidence that barefoot running
is better and safer than shod running, so, if we are to be
consistent, we should oppose against the use of all sports shoes. Then
all, children and many adults in Africa, India and Indo China can run, play
and perform the most demanding physical activities without shoes
(Along with kicking a soccer ball) – and there is accumulating research
shows that they have fewer problems than lower extremity their
shoe-wearing Western counterparts.
Research has shown that all the shoes that tend to increase the risk of pronation
injury and ankle sprains, plus they slow down the reactive capability
of the foot, unless the shoes are expensively modified in an attempt to
simulate the situation which takes place when one is barefoot (eg see
texts such as Nigg B ed, "The Biomechanics of Running Shoes"). Alone
should produce a strong case against the chronic use of shoes!
If, as the anti-belt brigade to maintain the body can easily adapt to lifting
no belt, so can our feet and bodies easily adapt to the stresses of
without movement and sport shoes. The soles of our feet can harden to cope
with frictional and impact loading (and sharp objects), our overall stiffness
and damping ratios can be changed to cope with all sorts of loading, we can
develop a greater range of movement with no shoes and we can build bigger
skills hand foot. It may even tend to make one believe that most shoes
clothes for fashion and look!
The bottom line? If you are going to use a belt or straps, and then just do it
intelligently and selectively! About the Author
