Fishing With Thirteen Mile Woods – Milan Errol, NH
The Great North Woods area of New Hampshire that features some of the best fishing and canoeing in the state, including the Thirteen Mile Woods area along the Androscoggin River.
The terrain varies from peaceful stretches of river meandering boreal forest through the wild rapids of Pontook and the large spot just below some dams along the rivers.
If you're a fisherman who enjoys the early hours morning or quiet moment around dusk, you're likely to find yourself sharing the river now and then a moose or a pair of nesting loons.
Depending on your choice of overnight accommodations in your choice range just as widely from camping in the small and friendly campsite Molligiwock State to "roughing it" in the balsams, one of New Hampshire's premier hotel resort.
The Thirteen Mile Woods begins just north of New Hampshire's largest northern City, Berlin (pronounced "Burl'n" if you want to speak like a native). Your experience will not only be a few hour of fishing. It was a trip back in history as well. You'll notice, for one thing, a lot of submerged logs in the river nearby. The Androscoggin River used for many years to run logs from the forests along and raise Thirteen Miles Woods down to the mills in Berlin. Large formations of rocks and logs line the river midcourse just north of Berlin.
Crib Rock in the Androscoggin River Piers was developed by Berlin mills so they can store the logs until they are needed. The piers are connected by log booms, connected end to end and also by log booms from every pier in the coast line. This will create a series of storage areas Mill and as called for in the logs, the boom is opened downstream side so just floated logs to the dam just north of present day paper mill. From there the logs were taken with water, and sent to the mill. At one time it was done by a steam powered conveyor system.
The rock piers were built in the wintertime. They waited for the ice to form so they can drag the large stones and logs out in the middle of river. They then are placed in the right place, and then the ice is cut around the rock pile, and then settled the rocks below. It took many repeats of the process to get the rock island to the level of water, then is the cradle rocks are formed and the balance of the stone placed.
You will also undoubtedly share the river with canoeists and kayakers as this river is the best whitewater year-round paddling all of New Hampshire.
If you visit the Thirteen Mile Woods area, you will also want to make some sidetrips to see one of the Lake Umbagog most pristine lakes in New Hampshire. In fact you may decide you want to make your trip a multi-day canoe trips and fishing combination. If so you have lots of choices.
